Homes With Dogs
LaminateMohawk PureTechPile carpetTileNo berber
Laminate is the most scratch-resistant traditional floor we sell, and Mohawk PureTech is waterproof and backed by Mohawk’s pet scratch warranty. A quality pile carpet with good stain resistance works well too, but skip berber: claws catch its loops. Tile is the most durable of all. Most people ask for LVP, and while it’s waterproof, it doesn’t handle claws quite as well as laminate.
Basements
LVPMohawk PureTechCarpetNo hardwood or traditional laminate
Below grade, it’s LVP, Mohawk PureTech or carpet. LVP is incredibly stable and waterproof, perfect for a dry basement where you want a hard floor. PureTech is a waterproof, PVC-free floor with a plant-based core, and we install a lot of it in basements.
But concrete needs to breathe. Moisture comes up through the slab and evaporates, and a vinyl floor on top traps it, which can damage the slab and grow mold where you can’t see it. The test is simple: tape a 1-foot square of plastic to the concrete and check it a day later. Dry underneath? LVP is a great choice. Wet? Go with carpet, and find out where the water is coming from.
Bathrooms
TileSheet vinyl on a budgetNo floating floors
We steer people away from floating floors like LVP and laminate in bathrooms. They’re waterproof on top, but if a small leak gets underneath, the water can’t evaporate. It just sits and rots the subfloor. Tile is the best choice, and sheet vinyl is a solid option on a budget.
Main Floors: Real Wood, More Choices
Kährs Wide CanvasHardwood
If you want real wood but not traditional hardwood, or you’re after more exotic colors and wider planks, we love Kährs and its Wide Canvas collection. It’s a real wood plank that installs as a click floor or with glue assist, and it’s amazing on the main floor of a home.
Carpet Worth Showing Off
Mohawk Random Nature II
Carpet isn’t just for budgets. Our favorite pattern right now is Mohawk Random Nature II. It has the textured look of berber, but it’s mostly a pile carpet, so it works in homes with pets where a true berber wouldn’t.
Thinking LVP? Check the Floor First
Flat within 1/8″ over 10 ft
Hard floors like LVP need a very flat subfloor, within about 1/8 of an inch over 10 feet. If yours isn’t, prep can double the expected price of the project. Carpet is far more forgiving and can cut that price in half. We measure and check flatness before you decide.
